Note from a sports data pro

A note from Angus McNab, Head of Pro Rugby and Sponsorship at Opta Sports. Angus will also serve on the judging panel of the AIG Rugby Innovation Challenge.

We’re really happy to have seen the initial interest in the competition and the data. It's the first time something this ambitious has ever been tried in the sport of rugby before, so thanks to everyone so far for being a part of it!

It's an exciting time in the sports data industry — in recent years, we've seen feature films made about the sector, sold-out conferences, and leaps in technological innovations in how we analyse, enjoy, and understand sports. Competitions like this can elevate sports data to yet another level.

Opta are proud to supply this rich data that offers many unique data mining and visualisation opportunities, and are excited to sit down and have a look at the work submitted once the challenge closes. (The deadline's October 9, 2013.)

I encourage you to check out the Quick-Start Guide, start your draft, and begin coding soon. We've got a panel of amazing judges who will be testing your software, and $85,000 in prizes await.

What can you create that will bring rugby to the masses?

If you have any quesitons about the data, please post them on the AIG Rugby Innovation Challenge Google Group. We're monitoring it closely, and would love to hear from you.
